As many have said, it has gone downhill. It used to be recommended by many developers.
It does not automatically update wordpress.
If you buy the smart-plugin-manager it also fails to update plugins. This is for vanilla wordpress content websites. I can’t imagine how bad it would be for complex websites or more traffic.
It also damaged our SEO with all of their domain rewriting garbage. The traces they leave in your wordpress install will take manual developer time to remove. Find another provider if you want managed wordpress. And also find another provider if you want cheap commodity hosting. Buy wpengine if you want to overpay and pretend you have a managed wordpress site while getting the worst of both worlds.
Arguably the better compromise. Simply reliable and affordable.

We were looking for a new provider and asked for initial call. We’ve been offered a month trial, after which we decided WPEngine can’t give us what we needed, so we kindly asked to cancel trial. We’ve been offered another month of trial and multiple emails and calls even after we said we want to cancel.
Also we never installed the website on the server or used their services and now I received few months worth of billing for over $3k.
I love how it is possible to develop something on LocalWP and just push it right into WP Engine and hoppa!! you are online and ready. Also, I like having three sites, the development, staging and production. Finally, the support is outside of this world!

I run an online store that uses WooCommerce. In the olden days of eCommerce, we used to build stores running on osCommerce and then Magento. While we didn’t need what Magento offered, and didn’t want to use osCommerce, we found that WooCommerce was the perfect fit. Why? Mainly because almost all sites we’ve built for others run on Wordpress and we’re very familiar with Wordpress and how it works alongside plugins and associated web services. The business problem it solved was keeping everything highly optimized for the Wordpress platform rather than trying to pick and choose specific hosting and dialing in settings. It’s also cheaper than getting a dedicated server.

I use WP Engine for every WordPress install I own, and when possible I recommend it to clients and business partners who use WordPress for the content management. We were looking for a better way to manage the hosting of our website and WP Engine was recommended to us. I wouldn’t want to use anything else. It is easy to use and has great tools and features built in, such as free SSL certificates, website backup, caching, redirects, and it even gives us the ability to use a staging site within WordPress. The ability to integrate with WordPress is another great advantage of using WP Engine. Their support team is great and can be answered easily via phone or chat.
WPengine is flawless in automated executions with server set ups and ease of use. When there is an anomaly, chat tech support is quick to remedy the situation.
WP Engine filled the void for our immediate need for managed WordPress hosting. The support was lackluster at best. A few MySQL server outages were not noticed by their proactive monitoring. A handful of downtimes due to server outages and migrations outside their data center also occurred. Their best features were the backups and staging, which we often used. Support also tried to upsell us and tell us that their dedicated plans would be more stable and reliable, but I don’t think it would’ve helped as much as they promised.

WP Engine *was* a leader in the Managed WordPress Hosting space. As such, we used WP Engine to host our website along with 117 client sites. From 2012 – 2017 WP Engine was outstanding. Since mid-2017 I have witnessed their heartbreaking fall from industry leader with the best critical thinking technical support team I had ever witnessed, to over-priced, technically unreliable, personally disinterested, commodity-level hosting, resting on their laurels spoiling their hard-earned reputation, with barely technically literate support staff copy-and-pasting canned responses with no regard for relevance or accuracy.
Overall WP Engines works well for us. We use it to host our various WordPress sites. This includes our main business site (which also encompasses our company blog) and a couple of smaller marketing sites for individual products. Everything is in-use across the whole organization, but end-users have very little interaction with WP Engine as they’re the underlying host and users just interact with WordPress itself.
I currently use WP Engine for all of my Wordpress hosted websites for me and my clients. WPE is great for websites of all sizes. I’ve used it for our daily B2B website, as well as sites that get around 20K to 500K visits a month. They have excellent hosting, support, and pricing.
Site admin went down after a domain config change. I only waited a few minutes for someone to chat with me. We resolved the issue relatively quickly.

I’ve tried on most of the website hosting companies, and several years ago, I moved ALL my clients to WP Engine. By far, they are the best company to host a WordPress website, and I won’t use anyone else. I know my stuff when it comes to WordPress, but every once in a while, I get stumped. Their tech support is always easy to reach and takes care of it every time. They’re tightly integrated with Cloudflare, which helps to make my clients’ sites safe from hackers and speeds them up at the same time.
MJ was fantastic and was able to figure out something that nobody else could see, with an old cdn url interfering and took care of deleting it, so hopefully it could prevent the issue from happening again. My rep took the time to explain everything to me so I could fully understand what was happening and even pointed out some outdated areas in our current theme to be aware of, things that I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise to look at. Hosting websites + website support, backing up sites, copying between production and staging environments on a regular basis, upgrading PHP versions, and consolidating a number of websites into one host platform. We also love the ability to jump right into the WP admin view from within our hosting platform. Their “go live checklist” feature was very useful when originally building our site.

We have an ecommerce store with a million plugins and integrations, so we use a TON of tech support. WP Engine has the kindest, most dedicated team of tech agents I’ve ever dealt with. They go above and beyond their scope to make sure all the “i’s are dotted”, not just the ones for WP Engine. I wish I could use them for all my tech issues.
I never need much because everything just works like it should, all the years I have been with them the service has been consistently reliable. When I do have to reach out it’s really only because I need to increase the default upload sizes and they’re so quick and responsive that I am set to go within minutes.

Support Staff like James E. make WPengine worth working with. I sometimes think they have gotten a little big for my tastes as they buy up all the plugins we all love and have pay walled some previously free features, but when you have the quality diagnostic support when you have an issue that piece of mind is worth a few extra dollars a month without any arguments.

Today I had the opportunity to talk to tech support and the experience was excellent. Like I always say “You dont know if an insurance company is good or not until you have a claim” I had a couple of questions today and all of them were answered to my satisfaction.
I was having issues with DNS after copying one site to another with a different name. After spending two hours trying to figure out if it’s a GoDaddy or WPEngine issue, I contacted support and Loki solved my issue. It ended up that our site needed a few changes after the copying it, and GoDaddy CNAME record needed a small change. Loki identified the issues and took care of the new site on the backend.
